Discover one of Malawi's most unique coffee-growing regions! Malawi Pamwamba coffee originates from the southern Thyolo district, where the first bushes were planted in 1979. The coffee plantations are situated at altitudes between 920 and 1100 meters, spreading across gentle valleys and steeper slopes, scattered with native forest patches that preserve the area's natural microclimate.
The Pamwamba cooperative follows a strict 7-8 year rotational program: the land is regularly replanted. This practice ensures that the harvest always comes from young, healthy, and disease-free shrubs, directly contributing to the coffee's clean and balanced flavor profile.
Terroir and farming:
- Healthy, young shrubs: Thanks to regular replanting, the plants are naturally resistant to diseases, resulting in a stable and high-quality yield.
- Nutrient-rich soil: The blend of dolerite clay and mineral-rich riverbed soil is extremely fertile, thereby enriching the coffee beans with complex flavor notes.
- Environmentally conscious farming: The natural forests interspersed within the plantations support local biodiversity and protect the arable land.

About the region
The Golden Mean in Flavor Profile
If we were to place it on a scale, Malawian coffee is a perfect bridge between Kenyan and Tanzanian profiles. It has the clean, berry-fruited acidity characteristic of African coffees, but its body is much creamier, silkier, often with a black tea, floral, or citrusy finish.
Lower Altitude, Yet Complex Flavors
Compared to East African coffees, an altitude of around 1100 meters might seem low at first. In Malawi, however, the microclimate compensates for this: due to the proximity of the vast Lake Malawi and its southern location, the nights are particularly cool. Temperature fluctuations slow down the ripening of the coffee cherries, allowing sugars and acids to accumulate higher contrentations in the beans than in other areas of similar altitude.
