The Buku washing station is located in the high-altitude southern regions of Ethiopia, in the heart of the Guji region, at an elevation of over 2000 meters above sea level. This elevated location, the volcanic, nutrient-rich soil, and the favorable microclimate provide ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. The station purchases coffee cherries from smallholder farmers who grow their plants using traditional, shaded agroforestry systems with an organic approach.

During processing, great attention is paid to detail: the cherries undergo careful manual sorting, followed by classic washed processing. As a result, the cup presents a clean, elegant profile characterized by floral aromas, a lively acidity, and complex fruity notes.

The lot's uniqueness is further enhanced by the presence of the JARC 74112 variety. This genetically selected, scientifically bred variant is the result of the work of the Ethiopian Jimma Agricultural Research Center, developed specifically for disease resistance and outstanding cup quality. The variety is primarily found in famous growing regions such as Sidama region, Yirgacheffe region, or Limmu region, and enjoys an excellent reputation in the world of specialty coffee.

The aroma of the JARC 74112 variety is characterized by delicate, floral notes, while its flavor profile is complex and balanced. Washed processing particularly highlights its cleanliness and vibrant acidity. It is no coincidence that it consistently achieves outstanding scores in quality assessments and is considered a sought-after, high-quality raw material in the specialty coffee market.

About the region

Thanks to abundant rainfall and a mountainous landscape, the Guji region provides an ideal home for coffee plantations. Although the impressively fruity flavors of coffees originating from here are clearly distinguishable from those of other growing regions, the region has only relatively recently received recognition as an independent coffee-producing region.

Previously, the area was closed due to mining activities, which limited agricultural use for a long time. Geographically, it is located in the western part of the country's southern national region, where natural conditions are exceptionally favorable for coffee cultivation.

Since most of the plantations were established in the last approximately 25 years, Guji coffee plants are currently at the peak of their life cycle. This optimal state results in an exceptionally rich and balanced yield—one that every roaster can only dream of.
